Martin and Gaylene from ALOSUN attended the “Homestar 1000” initiative exploratory meeting last week at the City Council – where we heard about the current construction of New Zealand’s first 9* home on the Homestar rating. [See website]
We also visited the homes under construction in Church Square, Addington and were impressed by the human scalability and simple eco features which will create a comfortable home with low running costs. It was also a very affordable home – costing less per square metre than some of the current builds happening in the city.
We applaud Homestar 1000’s initiative to build at least 1000 new homes with a minimum of 6 star rating. This should be mandatory for all new homes in New Zealand. It is a great shame that current building regulations have only a minimum of 3-4 Homestar rating. We advise all prospective home builders to check with their developer to demand at least a 6 star rating on their new home. We also advise home seekers to demand of their real estate agents an appraisal of the running costs of prospective new home purchases. We have seen and advised too many new homeowners that have exceedingly poor performance in energy efficiency.
